How it works

The formula

Exactly what this calculator does with your numbers — no hidden assumptions.

01percent

Fee on a payment

Fee = amount × percentage + fixed fee. On $100 at 3.49% + $0.49, PayPal keeps $3.98 and you receive $96.02.

02swap_horiz

How much to charge

To receive an exact amount: charge = (amount you want + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − percentage).

03public

International payments

When the buyer is outside the US, PayPal adds an international fee (1.5% by default here) on top of the base rate.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Q1What are PayPal’s fees in 2026?
For US businesses, PayPal Checkout is 3.49% + $0.49 per transaction, and goods & services or standard card payments are 2.99% + $0.49. Rates can differ by account, so check your own account’s fee page.
Q2How do I avoid paying PayPal fees myself?
Use “How much to charge” to find the amount that covers the fee — but check that passing fees on is allowed where you sell and by PayPal’s terms.
Q3Are there fees for currency conversion?
Yes, PayPal charges a currency conversion spread when currencies differ. It isn’t included here because it depends on the exchange rate at the time.
Q4Is sending money to friends free?
Personal payments to friends and family from a PayPal balance or bank in the US are generally free; paying with a card adds a fee. Business payments should use goods & services.

Estimates using standard US rates. Micropayment, nonprofit, chargeback and currency conversion fees are not included.
