Stripe Fees Explained (2026): Card Rates, International Fees and How Much to Charge

Updated October 9, 2026 · 4 min read

Stripe charges a percentage plus a fixed fee on each successful card payment, with add-ons for international cards and currency conversion. There is no monthly fee on standard pricing.

Standard US card pricing

High-volume businesses can ask Stripe for custom pricing, so always check the rate in your own account.

ChargeFee
Online card payment2.9% + $0.30
International card+1.5%
Currency conversionabout +1%

Examples

  • A $100 domestic card payment costs $3.20 — you receive $96.80.
  • A $100 payment on an international card costs 4.4% + $0.30 = $4.70 — you receive $95.30.

How much to charge to receive an exact amount

Charge = (amount you want + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029). To receive exactly $100, charge $103.30.

The Stripe Fee Calculator does this for you, including international and currency conversion add-ons.

Refunds and disputes

  • Refunds don’t cost an extra fee, but the original processing fee isn’t returned.
  • Disputes (chargebacks) carry a separate dispute fee — clear policies and tracking numbers help you avoid them.

Comparing processors

For a typical order, compare Stripe with PayPal, Square and Shopify Payments. The fixed fee matters most on low-priced items; the percentage matters most on large orders.
