Shopify Payments Fees and Transaction Fees Explained (2026)

Updated October 9, 2026 · 4 min read

On Shopify, the fee you pay per order depends on your plan and on whether you use Shopify Payments or another payment gateway.

Shopify Payments card rates (US)

PlanOnlineIn person
Basic2.9% + $0.302.6% + $0.10
Grow2.7% + $0.302.5% + $0.10
Advanced2.5% + $0.302.4% + $0.10

The third-party gateway fee

If you use another payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top of the gateway’s fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced.

Example: an $80 order on Basic through Shopify Payments costs 2.9% + $0.30 = $2.62. Through a third-party gateway it costs the gateway’s fee plus Shopify’s 2% ($1.60).

When does upgrading pay off?

Higher plans lower your card rate. Multiply the rate difference by your monthly sales: at $20,000 a month, the 0.2% difference between Basic and Grow is $40 — compare that with the difference in plan prices.
